Edit Candleriggs Market, 1930s

IF you ever wondered how the Merchant City got its name then look at this picture.
Whether it was wholesale fruit, cheese, meat, fish or tobacco you were after, at one stage it could all be bought in the heart of the city. Originally the area was home to candlemakers. The market hall was built in 1817.
As river trade declined, the market moved to the outskirts of the city.
Today the old market hall is the home of trendy bars and upmarket restaurants.
